PROJECT MAPEC
Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on children to support public health policies.
AIR POLLUTION AND HEALTH EFFECTS
The adverse health effects of air pollution are well documented. Also noteworthy is that recently, air pollution has been ranked among the human carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer of the WHO.
CHILDREN
are more vulnerable than adults to the effects of airborne agents, for several reasons: increased physical activity, more time outdoors, the greater amount of air inhaled per unit of weight, immaturity of certain organs, including the lungs, and the mechanisms of repair phone.
There is therefore a strong interest in the study of air pollution effects in children, with the aim of identifying markers of biological damage, such as DNA damage and the presence of micronuclei, predictive, at the population level, the onset of chronic diseases in adulthood.
Some factors may influence the effects of air pollution, by modulating the body's response, both in terms of aggravation that mitigation of damages, including nutrition, physical activity and exposure to other pollutants, such as those found within homes.
